To earlier

Hi

Here's a line from "Light as a Feather" s1e1.

"It's probably just that security guard we gave 40 bucks to earlier."

I can't understand the use of "to". Does it refer to "security guard" or is it something relevant to "earlier"? Is there something like "to earlier"? If any, what does it mean? Could you please help me out? Thanks in advance.

to refers to the security guard . earlier modifies gave The simplest way to clarify this is just to add a comma after 'to'. Or we can say eg It's probably just that security guard to whom we gave 40 bucks earlier.
