To do so for a reason

"To choose is to select one option in preference to others, and to do so for a reason."

(Jonathan Dancy.)

Is "so" an adverb or a pronoun in the sentence above? And if it is a pronoun, is the clause To choose is to select one option in preference to others its antecedent?

g. "this"), I would say that "so" is an adverb there. I don't think "so" can ever be a pronoun.

Even though it appears to be replaceable by a pronoun or noun (e.g. "this"), I would say that "so" is an adverb there. I don't think "so" can ever be a pronoun.
