To do it watching or by watching?

Hi. Please help. I think the part underlined is a to-infinitive.

The aim of this lesson/session is to help the students develop the ability to draw the object by looking at the photo.

I think we can write "He is going to draw the picture looking at the photo," but when you have what I think is a similar pattern in a to-infinitive, I think we need to put a preposition like "by." Do you think it is correct to write, "He is going to draw the picture by looking at the photo"?

I think this is incorrect (without the preposition "by").

The aim of this lesson/session is to help the students develop the ability to draw the object by looking at the photo.

I am sorry, but could you tell me if this sound OK and grammatically correct? I think we need to have the preposition "by" here. Am I correct?

In this lesson, the students are to form a rough sketch of the plot by watching the movie (or following their movie-watching) and answer questions afterward.

Thank you in advance.
