Grammar

to do/ doing

Hello,

I've seen people use the verbs "to do" and "doing" pretty much in similar situations.
What is the actual difference between them? Are they completely replaceable?

Thanks.

Please give examples of the kind of contexts that you are talking about. Clearly "to do" and "doing" are not interchangable in general.

Thanks for your reply. Let me ask my question another way since there are too many examples which they are using interchangeably.
Can you give me some examples that "to do" and "doing" are NOT interchangeable, please?

I agree with GPY. Your first question is far too broad to be dealt with in a single post. Here are some examples where doing isn't possible:

There is only one way to do it.
You ought to do it now.
I didn't want to do it then.

And here are three examples where to do isn't possible.:

She is doing her homework.
She enjoys doing it.
She looks forward to doing it.
