to direct someone outwards

If a wife directs a man outwards, what does she do? Does she help him socialise or what?

Thanks in advance.

The narrator, who is not married, says that the marriage would have brought its comforts. And while listing those comforts he mentions the woman directing her husband outwards.

Maybe the narrator wants to say that the wife pushes his husband to the outside world, in the meaning that her influence is the reason why he goes out of his comfort zone and tries to achieve something, for example to find a better job or travel somewhere.

She throws him out of the house, then probably throws his clothes out after him, goes inside, slams the door, and locks it behind her.

Or she does something else, but that's one thing it could mean if the speaker were in a joking mood.
