That is not a very accurate description. Oil companies have complex machines called "drilling rigs."

They bore holes in the ground down to the level where there are oil reservoirs. They line these holes with hollow tubes (pipes), which are cemented in place. This is called "drilling the well." When the drilling is complete, they can pump oil from deep in the ground up through the pipes.
