TO DIE/DEATH (SENTENCE MEANING)

Officials at a Houston jail took responsibility on Friday for the escape of a convicted murderer who had recently been sentenced to die.

In the above sentence, is it proper to use 'to die'? I feel it should be 'to death'. Please correct me if my understanding is wrong?
