to die away (of conversation)

Hello,
Would it be natural to say: "They talked for thirty minutes and then the conversation died away"?

Thank you. I might be wrong, GPY, but I think that "away" implies that the conversation drops/ends. A friend of mine suggested "die down" which is also acceptable, but has a slightly different meaning in my opinion. If it dies down, they talk less.

Compared to "die down", "die away" may suggest more strongly that it ceased altogether.
