Vocabulary

to deride/ridicule

Hello,
What's the difference between: "They derided/ridiculed his plan for saving money" in your opinion?
To deride something is basically to criticize it in a contemptuous way. Ridiculing something would involve laughing at it and/or making jokes about it in a harsh or cruel way. I think one could deride something by ridiculing it.

I am probably wrong so feel free to correct me. Thank you.
