To depend on something/to be dependent on something

Hello,

Do the sentences below sound okay?

- Your salary depends/is dependent on your work experience.

- How much money you get depends/is dependent on your individual circumstances.

I assume that "dependent" would sound better in the first sentence. If so, can't a salary depend on someone's experience? For some reason I think both sound okay, but that's probably not true.
