To demonstrate his guilt

Hi teachers,

It was only when the perpetrator, Han van Meegeren, was arrested near the end of the WWII for selling another "Vermeer" to top-ranking Nazi official Hermann Goring that he confessed to having forged what many considered a masterpiece. He was forced to paint another Vermeer from his jail cell to demonstrate his guilt.

1. Does "many" mean many people or many paintings?

2. Does the 2nd 'another Vermeer" the same painting as the 1st another Vermeer?

3. To demonstrate his guilt - Does that mean that Han van Meegeren had to prove he actually painted the forgery by painting it in the jail? Make sure it was him not other person?

Thank you.
