To defect?

Hi. Can I use defect in the following sentences? Is there a better alternative?

I used to be a huge fan of Amd, now I've defected to Nvidia.

I defected to Messi's side from Ronaldo's after I saw how well he played this season.

By Messi's side, I meant I now think Messi is the best now, not Ronaldo who I thought he was.

"To defect" means to abandon one side in a conflict for the opposing side. Your usage is fine in the slightly hyperbolic sense of turning the issue of market share or fandom into a figurative battle. "
