Vocabulary

to contend/vie for something

What's the difference between:
- The teams contending/vying for the trophy were evenly matched.
- The children were contending/vying for their father's attention.
- He's contending/vying with someone who's much more more experienced.
I think I'd go with contend in the first and vie in the second. What are the nuances between them?

There's really llittle significant difference. Neither is very common. The common term in everyday speech is, in my opinion, competing.

No doubt that "compete" is used much more frequently. I just wondered what the difference between these two was. The sentences I used were dictionary examples. Still, how would you differentiate between them?

I associate 'contend' more with organized sports and competitions.

'Vie' sounds to me a bit more disorganized and perhaps a bit more enthusiastic.
