To compromise

I hear people use 'compromise' in banking or computing regarding information/servers/data/bank accounts etc. What does 'to compromise' mean in that context? Is it a synonym of 'to hack sth'? Some examples I found on the internet:

1) Sony's servers were compromised last night.

2) My account has been compromised, what should I do?

3) 5 Steps to Take When Your Credit Card Is Compromised.

Thanks!

It means that an unauthorized person has gotten the login and password to access to your credit card, bank account, or other private site. Usually it means that they have done mischief, but not necessarily. The potential is there.

Broadly speaking, compromised means not secure, not safe.

eg
Your bank account may be compromised because someone hacked into the bank's computer, Or simply because you wrote down your PIN and then someone stole your wallet.

So, if someone says: My credit card has been compromised/ my credit card is compromised. They mean, that it is not safe to use, not necessarily that it was hacked? Do I understand it correctly? And thank you for your replies!

Happy studentMy credit card has been compromised
You have to cancel your account immediately before someone else uses your credit card information to buy lots of stuff.

My credit card was compromised twice. One time a hotel clerk (I had used my credit card to check into the hotel) used my information to buy cell phone time (international calls).
