Whistling and hand clapping is one of the most non verbal form of communication in Vietnam. especially hand clapping culture.

we often see applause at conferences or gala when welcoming delegates, we usually clap our hand to show a formal Welcome.

sometimes clapping is to stir up the atmosphere of the gala or concert.

Clap your hands also to cheer and applaud when someone does something well . For example, you did very well in your exam and your friends, your parents, your teacher will support you and praise you by clap their hand.

and about whistling I can't tell you correctly why we use it ,in my thought .people whistle to expressed that they are excited about something or just because they are happy ,they feel relaxed . sometimes people whistle when they want to draw someone's attention, but it is not really polite in some situation so we need to noticed.
