To commit yourself to Verb ?

I wonder whether such a usage as in 'He commited himself to help the people in need' is common or not. In fact, to commit yourself to verb+ing is the form I always use since the the verb coming after a preposition takes an ing form(verb+ing).

If you say that it's common, then we can make a generalization; can't we?
