'to come to terms with' (save the negative connotation)

Is there a word or a phrase that means 'to come to terms with' but without the negative connotation? I would describe this word as 'trying to understand the magnitude and significance of what has happened'.

Thank you

Hi PBF: How about "appreciate"? It has a positive connotation. I truely appreciate all that Mandela had done for world peace.

Without knowing the context it's difficult to suggest something appropriate.

What about "get to grips with"? "get one's head around"? Quite informal, but not negative.
