To combine (as two readings of a text) into a composite whole

conflate

1 a : to bring together : fuse b : confuse
2 : to combine (as two readings of a text) into a composite whole
[M-W's Col. Dic.]

What are these "two readings" of a 'same' text? If I read a novel there could possibly be only one coherent interpretation I could come up with, that's one reading (right?). Perhaps, the definition is saying if I take some ideas out of my friend's intrepretation and combine them with mine. Please guide me.
