Grammar

to college/university/hospital

Hello

Which one is correct?

- I went to college.

- I went to the college.

I found the first is correct, but why?

When I say "I went to the college.", I mean a specific college not ANY college.

Please I need more explanation.

Thanks

assuming "I went to the college." is pointing to a specific college, I think you should say

I went to this/that college or I went to NYU

I'm waiting to see what the others have to say. Anyway, hope this help!

IMO, both sentences are correct, however, they have different meanings. 'I went to college' means that 'I was admitted into a college' whereas 'I went to the college' means that 'I walked/drove to a certain college (for some reason)'.

I went to college is correct. It means that you studied at a college.

Is "I went to the college" correct?

Is "I went to the college" correct?
Yes, but it doesn't mean you were admitted to that college, studied at that college, took courses at that college, or graduated from that college. It means you went quite literally (drove, rode, walked, ran) to that place. A child of six can say "I went to the college". It has nothing to do with getting an education.

It all depends on the context:

Kim: Hey John, I got into Yale!

John: Congratulations! I knew you could do it. In fact I went to Yale too.

Kim: What! You did?

John: Yeah, I went to the college and graduated in three years with honors!

What about restaurant?

Hi,

Don't forget that 'college' can simply refer to a specific, physical place. Thus, you can say things like this.

On this street there is a gas station and a college. Yesterday I went to the gas station to fill up my car. Then I went to the college. I visited my friend there.

You can use the word 'restaurant' the same way.

Best wish

So is right to say a/the (college/hospital/university)?

What about "home"?

I know that "a home" and "the home" are totally wrong, why?
