Vocabulary

to claim lives

Hello, everyone.

What is the meaning of "claim" in this sentence:
"The quashed coup claimed the lives of 265 people, according to officials"

I'm familiar with a couple of meanings of "claim", but none of them seem to fit in here.

Thank you!
