To cash a cheque?

Hello everybody.
I have a question. Please take this case: Somebody has a cheque of a certain amount. He goes to the bank when the cheque is due, but finds out that there is not enough money in the drawee's deposit. Now what is the term for something that the payee does with the bounced cheque?
Sorry if my explanation is vague. I really tried my best!
Thank you in advance.

If I read this clearly, we're talking about "insufficient funds" in the account. The person then returns the check to the person who wrote it. I don't know of a term that expresses what the poor fellow actually does .

Thank you for answering. The payee returns the cheque to the drawee? I thought he must do something in the bank to make sure he will eventually get the money from the drawee. I don't know.
