to cancel/interrupt studies

Hello,
Can both verbs be used in "When I was your age I had to interrupt/cancel my studies for a few years"? I am not sure about "cancel", but it would make sense to me. Would it sound odd to you?

Thank you, Mr. Micawber. One last question. I think that "abandon" could be used here. I think it suggests a permanent action as well, but doesn't "for a few years" clarify the sentence's meaning?
"George nearly persuaded me to abandon my studies for a few months".

Yes. I don't think that works as well with 'cancel', though. 'Abandon' is being used in a less literal sense tha
