To buy or buying?

The following is a proofreading. I am not sure whether I should 1) change “buy” into “to buy” or “buying” or either? 2) whether I should change “and then” into “but then”?

My summer travel started terribly . I was at the Shanghai Railway Station buy a ticket to Hang Zhou. I was going to visit a friend there and after that I would go toXiamenfor a long holiday. I bought my ticket and turned around to pick up my bag Form the floor and then I realized that someone had stolen it. Luckily I had all my money in my pocket, but the only clothes I had were those I had on. It felt very strange to travel without any luggage. When I finally arrived at my friend’s he lent me lots of clothes. I felt very happy that I could change my clothes at last.

Either 'to buy' (purpose) or 'buying' (activity) will work. Either 'but then' or 'and then' is fine, but be sure to precede but/and with a comma.

Could you please tell me why we must precede but/and with a comma?

It is a coordinating conjunction between two independent clauses.
