To break a note into smaller notes

Hello,
Is it correct to ask someone "Could you break this $100 bill into ten $10 bills?" What do you use in everyday speech? I have heard people say "Can you break this down for me?", but it is not specific at all.

Top answer

" What do you use in everyday speech? Yes, that is fine. 'Break down' to me does not suggest banknotes but an explanation or invoice, for example, when seeking more detail.

Thank you/ Here comes my last question. In an even more informal context, could we ask a friend "Can you break this 100 into twenties, tens, fives, etc"?

Sure. Or 'You got smaller bills for this $100?'
