To border vs. to border on

Hello!

What's the difference between "to border & to border on"?

Canada borders the United States.
The United States borders on Canada.


These sentences are from www.thefreedictionary.com but I didn't understand the difference.

There is no real difference of meaning in your examples.

However, there are other ways to use this word. eg Tom is quite upset. He is bordering on hysteria. The idea is that he is close to becoming hysterical. Here, you need the 'on'.
