To Boot

Hi,

Must the phrase "to boot" be placed at the end of a sentence?

"He was a woman of uninspiring appearance and a dreadful bore to boot."

Is something like this possible?

"He was a most intelligent young man. To boot, he was a millionaire as well."

Thank you.

  • Also, given that 'to boot' and 'as well' mean the same thing, you'll need to leave off 'as well' at the end unless you are purposely multiplying synonyms for humorous effect, in which case you can have Moreover, in addition and to boot, he was also a millionaire as well, too.

Thank you.

I agree but it sounds strange to say:

"He is a handsome young man. To boot, he is a millionaire."

Something seems missing in the second sentence. I suppose "He is a handsome young man and a millionaire to boot" is still the best.

Someone has to point out the problem here:
He was a woman...

Should it be "He is a woman"?

Right. I was more interested in the millionaire case than in the transgender case.
