Vocabulary

to bolt in a particular direction

Hello everyone,
As far as I know "to bolt" means "to run in a sudden way because you are frightened." I've seen examples in which that's not the case however. Is it true that "bolt" cannot be followed by prepositions of direction and it would be odd to say:
- The horses bolted from out of the barn.
- Sarah bolted towards the door.
- He bolted awake when the alarm went off.
What do you think?

Thank you.

Top answer

- He bolted awake when the alarm went off. The second and third are fine. Drop either 'from' or 'out of' in the first.
