To bob

Hello,

During Halloween parties I know how to play "Bobing the apple", but what verb can replace this verb (in this case) . And is the verb to bob a regular one ?

Thanks in advance,

Sue

Bobbing for apples or bob for apples.

There's no other word to subtitute for it - you'd have to say "dunk your head in a tub of water to try to get an apple in your teeth."

Thanks, Grammar Geek. By the way why can't I say it is a game, but an activity if children play/do (?) it while they have fun ?

And is it a regular or a irregular verb ?

Thanks again,

Sue

I'll stick to "bobbing for apples", but thanks anyway!

What if we changed "dunk" to "plunge"? Would that make it any more appealing?

You "do" it, rather than "play" it.

You can do a lot of things that are fun, but a game has more specific rules, and someone wins. When you bob for apples, everyone can get an apple - everyone can be a winner.

I guess it's regular.

I bob, I bobbed, I have bobbed, I've been bobbing.

Oh, yes, GG! Plunging my head into a tub of water is so much more appealing than dunking my head into a tub of water! (Gack! Emotion: ick!)

I don't suppose you have a ponytail, CJ?
You guessed it. My hippy days are over. Would you believe crew cut? That makes it very hard to execute the head-thrown-back-water-spray trick! I've been keeping it 'buzzed' for the summer, but I may go back to medium length -- my more usual 'do' -- for the winter!

I call tell you that a lot of women love to rub their hands over the standing-up hair of a crew cut... has it brought you luck that way?
