Dear Users,
Is there any difference between these 3 verbs?
1) to blather
2) to waffle
3) to ramble
Can all 3 be followed by "on" and "about"? As in: to blather on/about something, to waffle on/about, to ramble on/about?
Thanks
Dictionary definitions: blather: to talk for a long time about something that is boring or not important waffle: to avoid making a decision or stating a clear opinion when you speak or write OR to talk or write using a lot of words but without saying anything interesting or important ramble: to talk for a long time in a confused way, especially about other things instead of the subject that you should be talking about I'd interpret these as follows: Blathering is talking for a long time about something trivial, not paying attention to the fact that nobody is listening except out of politeness because there's nothing being said to hold their attention. For me waffling is going back and forth between two different opinions or possible courses of action, unable to make up one's mind. Or giving support for both sides of an argument out of fear of angering people on either side of that argument.
