To behave

I felt that it got something problems. Can you help me to check?

(i) One day John's mother went to work. Before his mother went out, she told John to behave.
John was reading the books at home. (should I put add some words in fromt of this sentence?)

(ii) John was bored when he was reading. / John went reading in the house.

(iii) He broke a valuable vase. He was being frightened.

(iv) John's mother told him to behave in the house.
(Do we say "to behave in the house"?)

Thanks a lot for your helps.

Can I say,

John's mother went out and told him must behave (himself) in the house or read some storybooks.
