To begin with

The flower was teaching the four noble truths, showing that all our suffering is the result of struggling to grasp what can’t be grasped, since it’s always changing and never a separately existing thing to begin with.

In this senctence, the last phrase to begin with is rather confusing.

Does it mean from the beginning or first of all?

Another silly question.

Thanks in advance!
