When I lived in Canada I often heard people saying things like this e. g.:
I'm to go home at eight.
If I were to do sth,...
I asked my english teacher about it, back in Germany, but she just explained to me this couldn't possibly be correct and kept insisting on the correct form being: I am expected to go home at eight. If I were supposed to do sth,...
Now is it just very informal, or doesn't this form exist at all?
Top answer
It isn't heard with great regularity, but it is correct and sounds very natural.

When I lived in Canada I often heard people saying things like this e. g.:
I'm to go home at eight. This is fine. It expresses a strong sense of obligation or necessity, imposed on the speaker by someone else. It's similar to 'I have to'.
If I were to do sth,... This is fine. It shows that the suggestion is considered hypothetical.
