Hello. Could you please tell me what the phrase in bold means? Thank you.

"If they know nothing of victory, they are at least spared the knowledge of defeat."

"knowledge of defeat", i.e. knowing that one has been defeated, is a bad feeling; these people are "spared" this, i.e. they do not have to suffer it.
