To be of any use

Word and phonics knowledge have to be applied to real reading and writing to be of any use.

What is the grammatical function of the infinitive phrase "to be of any use"?

Is it an adverb answering the 'why adverb question' or it is an adjective modifying just "writing"?

Has "to be" got any real meaning or is just required for a syntactic role?

Thanks

  • It's like a subordinate clause (an if -clause).
  • I suppose you could call it adverbial if you want.
