To be in the run/running/race/discussion/conversation/hunt for...?

I don't know how/that he isn't in the ____ for Most Valuable Player. He's one of the best in the league.

I saw 'how' used. Should it be how or that?

Holding such a distinction automatically puts LeBron in the ___ for MVP for as long as he is in his prime.

I think I would use "why" and "running" ...

It's a horse-racing metaphor - if a horse is "in the running" then it is due to take part in the race: it's a contender
