Hi,
I would know what exactly does mean "it was back" in this sentence I have read on "Snow falling on cedars" book:
'It wasn't prison', Kabou told her. 'We thought it was back then because we didn't know any better'

You don't read it correctly. It is not "it was back". You should read it like this: "We thought it was [pause] back then [pause] because...". The sentence means that at that time they thought it was prison.
