Could you please explain the use of "be a ...".

I will pretend to be a traveller salesman.
Can we say it as "I will pretend like a traveller salesman."

Pretend to be = assume the character of, masquerade as, simulate. I will pretend to be the King / a salesman, someone's mother. Your other sentence is wrong.
