Hi.What does "to be 2 m tall and far away than 10 cm tall" mean in the following sentence ?"a human figure subtending only a small amount of the screen is more likely to be 2 m tall and far away than 10 cm tall and close"

It means that a person viewing this screen is more likely to be 2 metres tall and therefore further away from the screen than short and close to the screen.

I think your book is answering the question "How do film makers create 3-D if they don't have the new 3-D technology?"

There are various answers..

1) "A human figure subtending only a small amount of the screen is more likely to be 2 m tall and far away than 10 cm tall and close". This means that if, on the screen, you see two men, one appearing 2 m tall, the other 10 cm tall, then your eyes will tell you that the much shorter man is standing further away. In other words, your eyes will tell you that the screen has depth

2) Another answer is that the eyes understand focus. If you see a sharp image of a man standing against some fuzzy mountains then you will believe that the mountains are in the distance - even though you know that, on the flat screen, the images of man and mountains must be the same distance away

2) Another answer is that your eyes understand diagonal lines in a special way - they will assume the lines are going into the distance. There is an interesting trick that can be played with this, known as the Ames Room. It can be seen here...
