To be

I want to be a Chemistry teacher.
I know that "want" is the main verb.
Please explain the use of "to be". How do we know when to use "to be" and what does it mean here?

It is just the pattern "want + to-infinitive", like any other verb: I want to go shopping. I want to borrow a book. I want to find the truth.
