To be

It’s better to be honest about your feelings than to be fake.Why do we need " to be" here before honest and fake? Could someone elaborate on its usage and grammar specially when to use?

Without 'to be' you have It's better honest about your feelings than fake. That's bad grammar. It's as if you drew a picture of an elephant with no trunk and no tail. It's obvious that something is missing.
