To assume an affected mental attitude : POSE

Hi

Would you please help me with the definition below? Why does it have to be "mental", wouldn't it be 'physical' attitude, or combination of both?

attitudinize

to assume an affected mental attitude : POSE

[M-W's Col. Dic.]

Hi Jackson - it's probably the use of "pose" in the secondary definition that is giving you difficulty. In your definition, it is important to remember that "pose" is a mental attitude, not physical condition. One can pose as someone deranged but, in fact, be doing so just for dramatic effect.

  • I found another definition of attitudinize that I thought was good: adopt or express a particular attitude or attitudes, typically just for effect.
  • Hope this helps, John
