To assimilate?

Dear Everyone,

I checked two thesauruses for an almost perfect, not informal equivalent of “to learn” and found that “to assimilate” is very similar. I need a synonym which includes learning things of different nature (e.g. words, grammar etc.) and which implies both the comprehending and memorizing of those things.

Is “assimilate” okay? If not, what verb is? Could you help me with this, please? Thank you! Emotion: nodding

  • Neither 'comprehend' nor 'memorize' equate to learning; in fact, they often occur without the slightest bit of learning occurring.

Thank you, Mister Micawber! :-) I wonder, though, if I can use “acquire” when we talk about learning a poem or a song… or the pronunciation of a word, a grammatical structure, etc.

What can I replace the verb “learn” with when I need to use a word which has this meaning a lot but I want to avoid repeating "learn" too often?

That one at least is 'memorize'.
