To ask somebody (for) something...

Hello,

I wonder if there is any differences (in meaning) between:

1/ they will ask you /some reference and phone numbers

2/ they will ask you /for some reference and phone numbers

(I don't know which one is correct!)

Thank you for your help!

The word "for" is required. "some reference and phone numbers" may not be correct. I would need more context.
