To and for

THE election of a new American president is an event of great importance not only to the United States, but to the entire world.

Can I substitute "to" in bold with "for"? Thanks.

You can.

Also, and I could be wrong about this, but I believe that the coordinating conjunction "not only" must be used with "but also."

If I am right about that, you must say "The election of a new American president is an event of great importance not only to the United States, but also to the entire world."

Thanks Genre. I know "not only ... but also" is the normal, grammatically sound construction. But so many times I come across this construction with "also" dropped that I have almost got used to it. However, I myself use "also".
