Hi.Students read a short introduction to and synopsis of the focus and content of the information contained in the lecture.should it not be ' a short introduction to a synopsis...' ? I can't work out the function of 'and' here!

It's not a common structure, but it's necessary when the correct accompanying preposition is not the same for both nouns or verbs joined by 'and'.

We depend and rely on our father combines 'depend on' and 'rely on', so we don't repeat 'on'. We don't need to write We depend on and rely on our father. But we write both prepositions where necessary. We have an [[admiration for] and [reliance on] ] our father.
