To analyze a short story

Hello... Well.. I have got a question, we wrote a very very important test today and the task was to analyze a given short story...

I must admit, that I interpreted it in a wrong way, I wrote about another topic....
The problem was to read between the lines, the story is about racial segregation, but I thought it deals with worth decay... You know?

I suppose, that results in 0 points, topic failed..... I am very afraid of that, because this mark will be importnat for my Abitur and it makes 1/3 of my English result of this semester...

Well... My question (I told you so much, I am sorry ^^) is: Can an interpretation of a short-story be completly wrong?

I tried to found my answers, but I guess I can't change it...

Greetings!

Hi, Even if your interpretation is different to the one expected, if you have backed it up with evidence from the story and argued your point well, I think you should still get some points.
