To afford ground......

Hello. Could anyone explain to me what it means to afford ground?

I found the expression in the online dictionary's entry for "actionable," which was as follows:

subject to or affording ground for an action or suit at law.

Thank you so much in advance.

To 'afford ground' is a legal term and not generally used in day-to-day language. Put simply, it means that someone has done something that could allow another individual to take legal action. In the past, the term also meant to 'give ground' or to concede space to another.
