Tired of him vs. his

Hi I was wondering which was the correct pronoun for this sentence.

"The teachers were getting tired of him/his constantly falling asleep in class."

Him sounds correct but his is apparently the right answer? Him is the objective pronoun and is used as an object of preposition in this case isn't it? When do you use him vs his? Thank you.
