Tip it over

If I tip something over, do I necessary make it fall to the ground?

Can I say:

1) I tipped the chair over and looked under it.

2) I tipped the chair over a little and looked under it.

If I just tilted it?

Gratefully,

  • No.

  • Also, you might tip over a glass of water at a meal, and even though the water spills all over the table, the glass does not have to fall to the ground to qualify the action as "tipping something over".
