Hi,

Are "tip your head back" and "raise your head" both natural English?

Hi,

I have found a sentence from a novel. It is like this:

He reached the fireplace wall safely, and tipping his head far back, looked at the mantel forty feet above him.

Is "raise one's head" natural?

We usually tip our hats but tip our head is fine. "raise one's head" is fine, too.

They don't mean the same thing to me.

If someone has his chin on his chest, you could ask him to "raise his head" so he's looking level.
If you want someone to look up at something in sky/ceiling/etc., you could suggest he "tip/tilt his head back."
